Indonesian President Joko Widodo Meets with Qin Gang

On February 22, 2023 local time, Indonesian President Joko Widodo met in Jakarta with visiting Foreign Minister Qin Gang.

Widodo asked Qin Gang to convey his sincere greetings and best wishes to President Xi Jinping, and his congratulations beforehand for a great success of the upcoming two sessions of the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. He expected the two sides to speed up the implementation of the common understandings between the two heads of state at their meeting in Bali and prepare for the high-level exchanges for the next stage. Widodo said that in recent years, practical cooperation between Indonesia and China has yielded fruitful outcomes, bilateral trade and investment enjoyed a rapid increase, and China has become the second-largest source of foreign investment in Indonesia. The two sides should accelerate the key projects such as the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway, the North Kalimantan Industrial Park, and the development of Indonesia's new capital, and expand cooperation in industrial chains and new energy, among others.

Widodo said that Asia is the center of the world's economic growth and should not be a battlefield of powers. Indonesia is ready to work with China to maintain regional peace and stability, and boost post-pandemic recovery. Indonesia appreciates China for supporting the ASEAN centrality and will follow the five-point consensus to handle the Myanmar issue.

Qin Gang conveyed President Xi Jinping's warm greetings to President Widodo. He said that China will work with Indonesia to follow the guidance of the important consensus between the presidents, adhere to following the top-level guidance, seek synergy in development and coordination between major countries, and pursue common development on the path to modernization. The two sides should try the utmost to ensure an on-schedule completion of the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway and its opening to traffic, and build more flagship projects of the Belt and Road cooperation. China is ready to import more commodities and high-quality agricultural and fishery products from Indonesia, and encourages competent Chinese enterprises to participate in major infrastructure development projects of Indonesia.

Qin Gang noted that the Asia-Pacific region is profoundly influenced by the changes unseen in a century. The more complex the situation is, the more China and ASEAN should strengthen unity and cooperation to safeguard peace, stability, development and prosperity in the region. China fully supports Indonesia in playing its role as Chair of ASEAN and leading ASEAN's Community-building and achieving greater outcomes in East Asian cooperation. China will, as always, support ASEAN centrality and to settle the Myanmar issue in the ASEAN way.

During his visit, Qin Gang chairs the 4th meeting of the Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation between China and Indonesia with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, and meets respectively with Indonesia's Coordinator for Cooperation with China and Coordinating Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, and Secretary-General of ASEAN Kao Kim Hourn.
