French President Emmanuel Macron Meets with Wang Yi

On February 15, 2023 local time, French President Emmanuel Macron met with Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, at the Elysee Palace in Paris.

Wang Yi first conveyed President Xi Jinping's cordial greetings to Macron and briefed him on the important significance of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. Wang Yi said that China always regards France as a priority partner for cooperation and is ready to further step up high-level exchanges with France to open up new prospects for China-France relations, add new momentum to China-EU relations, and make new contributions to promoting international cooperation and tackling global challenges.

Wang Yi said China and France have helped each other in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. With its economy recovering rapidly and its society returning to normal, China is ready to fully restart exchanges with France in all fields.

Macron asked Wang Yi to convey his sincere greetings to President Xi Jinping, and once again extended congratulations on the complete success of the 20th CPC National Congress, saying that he looks forward to renewing the friendship with President Xi and strengthening cooperation with him to jointly create a better future. Macron stressed that France values its relations with China and deems it very important for France and China to strengthen strategic dialogue. In the face of the increased complexity in the international situation, France and China need to work together to maintain stability and balance, uphold multilateralism, oppose bloc confrontation and avoid division of the world. France hopes to strengthen bilateral cooperation in climate change, biodiversity, marine protection and other fields.

The two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on the Ukraine issue. Wang Yi stressed that China holds an objective and impartial position on the Ukraine issue, and is  committed to promoting peace talks. China values France's independent role as a major country and stands ready to work with France and other members of the international community to explore ways to solve the issue through political means so as to achieve a ceasefire and an end to the conflict at an early date.

On the same day, Wang Yi also met with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna.
