Wang Yi Holds Talks with ROK Foreign Minister Park Jin

On August 9, 2022, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held long talks with the visiting Foreign Minister Park Jin of the Republic of Korea (ROK) in Qingdao, Shandong Province.

Wang Yi stressed that the two sides should take stock of the useful experience accumulated over the past 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relationship, and steer the development of bilateral relations on the right course, so as to open up the next 30 years of common development and prosperity. As the  two neighboring countries, the right way to get along with each other lies in maintaining continuity and consistency of policies.

Park Jin said that as the world is entering a period of great transformation with increasing global turbulence, the ROK is ready to take the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries as an opportunity to carry out open and inclusive cooperation on the basis of the ROK-China strategic cooperative partnership and in line with mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit and enhancing mutual trust, so as to make bilateral relations more mature and sounder.

The two sides agreed to make sure the success of celebrations for the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations to inject more positive and stable expectations into bilateral relations.

The two sides agreed on the early negotiation and conclusion of a joint action plan for the future development of China-ROK relations between the foreign ministries of the two countries. The two sides agreed to hold a high-level strategic dialogue between the foreign ministries of the two countries and a "two-plus-two" diplomatic and security dialogue within this year, actively promote the joint research work of the Committee for Future Development of China-ROK Relations, and explore the way to build the committee into a track 1.5 communication mechanism and a platform for exchanges among governments, businesses and academia.

Both sides agreed to speed up the second-phase negotiation on the China-ROK free trade agreement and strive to reach a consensus at an early date; hold dialogues on maintaining the stability of industrial and supply chains, and strive for the integrity, security, smoothness, openness and inclusiveness of industrial and supply chains; stick to trade and investment liberalization, abide by World Trade Organization rules, and uphold the principles of non-discrimination, non-exclusion, openness and transparency.

The two sides agreed to make sure the success of the closing ceremony of the China-ROK Year of Cultural Exchanges, hold a successful meeting of the Committee for the Promotion of People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges, and strengthen exchanges and cooperation between China and the ROK in areas of people-to-people and cultural affairs and media. It's important to launch more direct flights to further facilitate personnel exchanges.

The two sides had an in-depth exchange of views and expounded respective positions on the THAAD issue. The two sides underlined the need to take seriously each other's security concerns and to strive to properly handle the issue so that it will not become a stumbling block to bilateral relations.

The two sides continue to pay close attention to Japan's move to release nuclear-contaminated water into the sea, and deem that Japan should conduct full consultations with stakeholders concerned.

The two sides exchanged views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula. Wang Yi said that the ROK and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea(DPRK) are the real masters of the Peninsula, and that China supports them in improving bilateral relations and following the principle of phased and synchronized actions and the "dual-track approach" to advance the denuclearization of the Peninsula and build a peace mechanism on the Peninsula. China will continue to play a constructive role in this regard.
