Wang Yi Attends the 29th ASEAN Regional Forum Foreign Ministers' Meeting
2022-08-06 23:55

On August 5, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the 29th ASEAN Regional Forum Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Phnom Penh.

Wang Yi expressed that at present, the world is under the combined impact of major changes and a pandemic both unseen in a century, and is challenged by the resurgence of Cold War mentality. Globalization is confronted with headwinds and the problems of breakage and decoupling of supply and industrial chains as well as food and energy security are becoming more and more prominent. But the aspirations of regional countries for maintaining peace and stability and for promoting common security do not change, their appeals to speed up economic recovery and achieve sustainable development do not change, and their spirit of seeking solidarity and cooperation, and pulling together to tide over the difficult times does not change.

Wang Yi said, under current circumstances, countries in the region should build on and strengthen the ASEAN-centered cooperation platform, and jointly safeguard peace, stability and development in the Asia-Pacific.

First, earnestly abiding by the UN Charter and international law. We should jointly maintain the international system with the United Nations at its core, and uphold the international order underpinned by international law, not imposing the so-called "rules" of an individual country or a bloc of countries on other states to coerce them into taking sides.

Second, accommodating the interests of every party. We should pull together and help each other, and provide more global public goods. In the pursuit of its own interests, one country should respect other countries' development needs, and promote common progress in the region while achieving its own development. We oppose some certain major countries arrogantly pushing forward unilateralism, still less accept illegal acts of sanctions and suppression.

Third, promoting common security. We should attach importance to and show respect for other countries' legitimate security concerns, and jointly safeguard regional peace and stability, to achieve true security. We welcome the participation of various parties in the Global Security Initiative, their efforts to practice the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, and their commitment to resolving differences and disputes through dialogue and consultation.
