On August 1, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin in Dushanbe.

Recalling the 30 years of diplomatic relations, Wang Yi said that China-Tajikistan relations have achieved rapid development and scored many “firsts”. The two sides took the lead in signing documents on Belt and Road cooperation and in building a development community and a security community, making important contributions to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. In February this year, President Xi Jinping and President Emomali Rahmon held an important meeting, mapping out a new strategic plan for China-Tajikistan relations. China is ready to work with Tajikistan to take the opportunity of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations to follow through on the important common understanding reached between the two heads of state and make joint efforts toward the vision and goal of building a China-Tajikistan community with a shared future, so as to build positive expectations for long-term mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries and add strong momentum to future development of bilateral relations. China firmly supports Tajikistan in safeguarding sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, pursuing a path of development and revitalization suited to its national conditions, and playing a more important role in international and regional affairs.

Muhriddin said Tajikistan and China are good neighbors, good friends and good partners. The two countries have always coexisted in peace and pursued win-win cooperation, setting a good example of state-to-state exchanges. Tajikistan firmly supports China in safeguarding its core interests and strictly abides by the one-China principle. The development strategies of Tajikistan and China are highly aligned. Tajikistan supports the idea of making a long-term plan for the development of bilateral relations, and welcomes and supports making the building of a China-Tajikistan community with a shared future the vision and goal of joint efforts. The two sides can have further discussions in this regard.

Muhriddin said Tajikistan appreciates China’s remarkable achievements in poverty alleviation and innovative development, and looks forward to drawing on China’s successful experience to help Tajikistan achieve sustainable development and accelerate industrialization. The two sides also need to increase connectivity, enhance economic, trade and investment cooperation, and expand exchanges and cooperation on production capacity, minerals, infrastructure, e-commerce, artificial intelligence, agriculture, as well as at sub-national levels. He thanked China for providing vaccine assistance and would like to see enhanced bilateral cooperation on pandemic response. He also noted that Tajikistan-China relations go far beyond the bilateral context. Tajikistan is ready to step up communication and coordination with China within multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and deepen security cooperation to jointly safeguard regional peace and tranquility.

Wang Yi said China and Tajikistan have overcome the challenges brought by the pandemic and made new progress in cooperation in various fields. Bilateral trade volume is expected to hit a record high this year despite the headwind. It is important that the two sides ensure sound implementation of the signed medium and long-term economic and trade cooperation plan, seek greater synergy between development strategies, strengthen cooperation on production capacity and infrastructure, among others, and expand cooperation in new emerging areas such as digital economy, new energy and high technology. China will continue to actively advance key China-assisted projects in Tajikistan, manage well the Luban Workshop, the first of its kind in Central Asia, and import more quality green agro-products from Tajikistan. China will continue to provide vaccine assistance to Tajikistan in light of its needs to help build a safety barrier against the pandemic, build well the China-Tajikistan center for traditional medicine, and strengthen cooperation with Tajikistan on traditional medicine. The two sides also need to strengthen security cooperation to enhance the capacity to guard against risks, and safeguard the shared home.

The two sides exchanged views on deepening China+Central Asia (C+C5) cooperation, and agreed to advance cooperation in priority areas, and build an all-round, multi-tiered and multi-dimensional cooperation pattern.

After the talks, the two sides signed cooperation documents between the two foreign ministries and jointly attended the inauguration ceremony of the Luban Workshop in Tajikistan and the handover ceremony of China-aided COVID-19 vaccines to Tajikistan.
