2022-06-03 22:26

On June 3, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister of Papua New Guinea (PNG) Soroi Eoe jointly met the press in Port Moresby.

Wang Yi said that PNG was the first Pacific Island Country to sign the memorandum of understanding and cooperation plan with China on Belt and Road cooperation, and has become China's largest trading partner, investment destination and project contracting market in the region. China-aided projects such as roads, bridges, universities, hydropower stations and state grid in PNG have made important contributions to the PNG's economic development and improvement of people's livelihood. China's policy towards PNG is open to all the people in the country and is supported by all parties and factions in the country. China never interferes in other countries' internal affairs and hopes that PNG will maintain good governance and social harmony and speed up development and revitalization.

Wang Yi introduced the five-point consensus reached by both sides on deepening bilateral strategic cooperation.

First, set the course forward. The two sides believe that in the face of the volatile international and regional situation, bilateral relations can only be strengthened, not weakened. The two sides agree to firmly grasp the positioning of the comprehensive strategic partnership and push bilateral relations to a higher level and in wider areas.

Second, firmly support each other. China firmly supports PNG in safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, pursuing a development path suited to its national conditions and pursuing an independent foreign policy. China appreciates PNG's firm adherence to the one-China principle and its valuable support for China on issues concerning China's core interests and major concerns.

Third, accelerate common development. The two sides need to promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and jointly implement the Global Development Initiative. China encourages more Chinese enterprises to invest and do business in PNG to help the country's industrialization and enhance its capacity for self-generated development. China supports the Connect PNG Infrastructure Development Program 2020-2040 and the plan of establishing special economic zones, and strives to jointly build a number of landmark projects of mutual benefit and win-win results.

Fourth, jointly address challenges. China will continue to provide economic and technical assistance with no political strings attached for PNG to help its economic and social development. China will continue to support PNG in its fight against COVID-19 until the pandemic is totally defeated.

Fifth, strengthen multilateral coordination. The two sides will strengthen coordination and cooperation, send a common message on the international stage, call on the international community to pay more attention to the special concerns of PNG and other Pacific Island Countries (PICs), and provide concrete assistance to climate change response and sustainable development of common concern to PICs. The two sides support the establishment of the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone and remain vigilant against the risk of nuclear proliferation in the region.

Wang Yi stressed that we are satisfied with the results of bilateral cooperation and full of confidence in the prospect of bilateral relations, and are ready to work with PNG to build a higher level of bilateral relations that can better promote the well-being of the two peoples.
