Wang Yi: China Hopes UN High Commissioner for Human Rights' Trip to China Would Help Enhance Understanding and Cooperation and Clarify Misinformation
2022-05-24 15:33

On May 23, 2022, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with visiting United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet in Guangzhou.

Wang Yi said, the High Commissioner for Human Rights' trip to China would help enhance understanding. As an ancient Chinese saying goes, "Listen to both sides and you will be enlightened; heed only one side and you will remain ignorant." Another Chinese proverb goes, "One seeing is better than a hundred hearings." China, a super-large country boasting 5,000 years of civilization, is undergoing remarkable positive changes unseen in human history. China hopes that the High Commissioner for Human Rights, through this field visit, will fully understand the philosophy, path and achievements of China's development, as well as China's practice of and progress in promoting the protection of human rights.

Wang Yi said, the High Commissioner for Human Rights' trip to China would help enhance cooperation. China has always been the staunchest supporter of the UN cause. Under the current situation of rampant unilateralism, declining multilateralism and the weakening role of the UN, the international community should especially hold high the banner of the UN, unswervingly defend the international system with the UN at its core, and safeguard the basic norms governing international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. China is ready to take this visit as an opportunity to explore ways to strengthen cooperation with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and leverage respective strengths to jointly help developing countries enhance their capacity building in promoting and protecting human rights, so as to elevate bilateral cooperation to new heights and open up new prospects.

Wang Yi stressed, the High Commissioner for Human Rights' trip to China would also help clarify misinformation. Currently, some countries and anti-China forces spread misinformation related to China in the world and discredit China for no reason, with the aim of containing and suppressing China under the pretext of human rights issues, and politicizing and weaponizing human rights issues. China's endeavor in human rights development, being rooted in outstanding traditional culture and learning from advanced philosophies of other countries, stays committed to its distinctive features and can withstand the test of history. China hopes that this visit will help clarify misinformation and lay bare rumors and lies with facts and truth.
