Li Keqiang Meets with President Taneti Maamau of Kiribati

On the morning of January 6, 2020, Premier Li Keqiang met with President Taneti Maamau of Kiribati, who was in China for a state visit, at the Great Hall of the People.

Li Keqiang said, the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Kiribati last year laid a political foundation for the development of bilateral relations and also created opportunities for all-round cooperation between our two countries. The Chinese side attaches great importance to the development of China-Kiribati relations. President Xi Jinping will hold talks with Mr. President. The Chinese side has always held that all countries, big or small, are equal. China firmly supports the Kiribati side in choosing a development path that suits its national conditions and the Kiribati government in making efforts to develop its economy and improve people's livelihood. China stands ready to provide assistance for Kiribati within its capacity. China is willing to maintain close high-level contact with the Kiribati side, enhance political mutual trust, expand mutually-beneficial cooperation and jointly push forward bilateral relations for positive and steady development.

Li Keqiang expressed, the Chinese government supports Chinese enterprises in conducting cooperation with the Kiribati side based on market and commercial principles. Kiribati boasts bountiful fishery resources while Chinese consumers have fast-growing demands for marine products. There is great potential for bilateral cooperation. China is willing to enhance cooperation in pelagic fishing with the Kiribati side to realize mutual benefit and win-win results. The Chinese side attaches great importance to the special concerns of the Pacific Island countries including the Kiribati side on climate change and is ready to enhance cooperation with Kiribati in addressing climate change under the framework of South-South cooperation and in accordance with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities.

Taneti Maamau said, since the resumption of diplomatic relations last year, bilateral relations have continuously moved forward, with positive progress and fruitful results from bilateral cooperation. The Kiribati side hails the Chinese side's constructive role in international affairs and its important contributions to coping with climate change. The Kiribati side thanks the Chinese side for its selfless assistance. Chinese enterprises are welcome to invest in Kiribati. Kiribati is willing to enhance cooperation and exchanges with China in areas such as economy and trade, fishery, agriculture, education, healthcare and people-to-people and cultural engagement to jointly realize sustainable development and prosperity.
