2007-08-01 00:00

On the afternoon of August 1, 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Henry Paulson, U.S. Treasury Secretary and Special Representative of U.S. President George W. Bush, at the Great Hall of the People.

Hu said the development of Sino-U.S. relations has brought tangible benefits to both peoples and had an important impact on maintaining and promoting world peace, stability and development. China is ready to work with the U.S. to further strengthen strategic cooperation of mutual trust and mutual benefit, properly handle issues of mutual concern and continuously expand common interests so as to push for new progress of Sino-U.S. constructive cooperative ties, Hu said.

Hu pointed out that sound and stable bilateral economic relations were in the fundamental interests of both nations and peoples, and served "a need" to maintain a stable growth of the world economy. He suggested both sides give full play to the leading role of Sino-U.S. strategic economic dialogue (SED) and enable it to complement other consultation and coordination mechanisms between the two countries. Both sides should deepen dialogue and exchanges based on the principles of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation and come out with new ideas and new approaches to cement cooperation and address the challenges. The projects or programs yielded from the first two rounds of dialogue should be "thoroughly implemented" to benefit both peoples and push Sino-U.S. trade cooperation to a new level, Hu urged.

Paulson said the SED mechanism was launched based on the consensus reached by the two heads of state and both sides should make joint efforts to make it a success, which is conducive to common interests of the two nations. Paulson told Hu the SED was "in a key stage of development", pledging that he would work closely with Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi to make it a success as a bridge in defusing China-U.S. disputes, narrowing differences, addressing bilateral trade issues and boosting trade relations. He said the U.S. looks forward to deepening cooperation with China on energy, environmental protection, product safety, investment and finance to realize mutual benefit.

Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi and other officials attended the meeting.
