Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi Holds Talks with President of 61st Session of the United Nations General Assembly Sheika Haya

On June 22, 2007, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held talks at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse with Sheika Haya Rashed Al Khalifa, president of the 61st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Yang spoke highly of the positive progress made in the 61st session of the United Nations General Assembly, saying that China supports the UN General Assembly to fulfill its duty in accordance with the UN Charter and to make greater contribution to world peace, common development and international cooperation.

Yang emphasized that China supports the UN to better adapt to the needs of the 21st century through reforms. Recent years have witnessed lots of positive developments in the UN reforms, he said, adding that in the next stage focus should be put on consolidating the existing achievements of the reforms and pushing for a bigger role of the UN in the area of development. Reforms to the United Nations should always be based on the solidarity among members and long-term interests of the organization in a bid to expand consensus and yield more results through frank communication and patient consultations, said Yang.

Sheika Haya thanked China for its firm support of the organization and of herself in her presidential role. She said China plays an important role in international affairs as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a major developing country. She noted that reforms are one of the priority tasks of the UN and their purpose is to strengthen the organization's authority and role so that it can better meet new challenges and threats. Sheika Haya expressed her willingness to maintain close communication with China to ensure the work of the UN and its General Assembly to be carried out successfully. She also reaffirmed the General Assembly's continued adherence to the one-China policy.

The two sides also exchanged views on the Middle East, Darfur and climate change.
