met with King Albert II of Belgium in the Great Hall of the People

On June 7, 2005, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) met with King Albert II of Belgium in the Great Hall of the People.

Wu expressed gladness to meet with Albert II once more since their last meeting 12 years ago and admiration for his care and support for the development of bilateral ties over years. He said that in recent years China-Belgium relations advance steadily, the bilateral high-level exchanges remain close and political dialogue continues deepening. The bilateral economic and trade cooperation, especially the cooperation between the businesses of the two countries has made fruitful achievements and the exchanges in such fields as science and technology, education and culture get increasingly dynamic. During the visit of His Excellency King Albert II to China, both sides reached wide consensus on deepening the cooperation in economy and trade, science and technology and other fields. He expressed confidence that the visit of King Albert II will surely push for the all-round and in-depth development of the already existing sound cooperative relations between China and Belgium.

Wu said that the relations between the NPC of China and the Belgian parliament are major part of the bilateral ties and serve as an important channel for accelerating the friendly cooperation between the two countries. The NPC is willing to further develop relations with the Belgian parliament, promote the exchanges of the leaders, special committees and friendship group of both sides at all levels, share legislative experiences and strengthen cooperation in both the international and regional parliamentary organizations.

King Albert II said that during his visit he once more witnessed the great achievements of China since its reform and opening-up and expressed congratulations. Although his visit is short, fruitful results have been achieved, which helps expand the bilateral cooperative areas, deepen the cooperative content and strongly push forward the all-round progress of Belgium-China relations.
