To improve air quality, China IV Stage Vehicle Exhaust Emission Standard (which equals Euro 4 Standard) covering new vehicles will be introduced in Beijing in early 2008. After the new standard goes into effect, the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau will not accept applications for registration for vehicles that fail to meet the new standard. According to the regulations, diesel vehicles will not be registered in Beijing.

The Chinese Embassy to the Kingdom of Belgium has advised the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belgium to notify its personnel to be posted in Beijing that they should ensure that their gasoline vehicles brought into China after 1 January 2008 meet Euro 4 Standard for exhaust emission.
