Remark by Ambassador Cao Zhongming on the Occasion of the 71st Anniversary of the Founding of The People's Republic of China
2020-09-28 15:32

Overseas Chinese,

Dear Friends,

Hello everyone!

On the occasion of the 71st Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China, I would like to extend warmest greetings to all overseas Chinese who work, live and study in Belgium. I say thank you to all our friends from across the different sectors of the Belgian societies, as well as from the diplomatic missions and international agencies in Belgium, for your attention and support for China's development, and your contribution to China-Belgium friendship.

The past 71 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China bear witness to the sea changes taken place in China as a result of the hard work of the Chinese people, and to China's continuous integration and contribution to the world economy. The Communist Party of China has led hundreds of millions of Chinese people to create the miracles of building socialism in a large eastern country with relatively backward economic and cultural conditions, achieving rapid economic growth and social stability, and lifting a greater number of poor people out of poverty than anywhere else in the world. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the Chinese nation has achieved a tremendous transformation from standing up, growing rich to becoming strong. China now stands tall and firm in the East with an entirely new posture. Chinese people and Chinese descendants abroad take pride in this.

In 2020, China stands at the intersection of the two centenary goals. We will complete building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and realize the first centenary goal. We will secure the historic victory of the battle against poverty and eradicate absolute poverty. This year, the 13th Five-Year Plan came to a conclusion; the first Civil Code in the history of the New China was officially promulgated; the Tianwen-1 probe was successfully launched, and the Beidou Navigation Satellite System was completed and now provides global navigation coverage. On the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, our country will embark on a new journey of building a modern socialist country and will march towards the second centenary goal.

In 2020, in the face of the tough test presented by the COVID-19 outbreak, General Secretary Xi Jinping has personally directed and planned China's response against the epidemic, rallying nationwide efforts and waging a people's war and a comprehensive battle to contain the virus. Thanks to the enormous efforts, the country has made strategic achievements in fighting the virus. China is steadfastly implementing the policy of maintaining stability in the six key areas (namely, employment, finance, foreign trade, foreign investment, domestic investment, and market expectations) and providing protections in another six priority areas (namely, employment, people's livelihood, the development of market entities, food and energy security, stable operation of the industrial and supply chains, and smooth functioning at the community level). In the second quarter of this year, the Chinese economy has bounced back to positive growth. Resumption of work, production, market and commercial activities is accelerating. In the meantime, we are fostering new growth drivers and building a new development mode anchored by free-flowing domestic circulation, augmented and mutually reinforced by international circulation.

In 2020, China has shown its strong sense of responsibility to the world amid drastic international changes and daunting challenges. At the critical moment of the fight against the epidemic, China timely disclosed information related to the epidemic. The country has shared knowledge on diagnosis and treatment gained through its experiences dealing with the virus, promoted international cooperation in prevention and control, supported the World Health Organization in leading the global fight against the virus, and promised to make its vaccine global public goods. China has offered 283 batches of medical supplies to more than 150 countries and four international organizations, taking concrete actions to help save the lives of tens of thousands of people. China is unswervingly committed to the path of peaceful development, and to deepening friendly cooperation with other countries through further opening-up. China is a staunch supporter of the international system with the United Nations as the core and the law-based international order. We resolutely safeguard multilateralism, work for further improving global governance, and strive towards building a community with a shared future for mankind. China will always be a force promoting world peace, stability, development and prosperity.

China-Belgium relations have maintained a sound growth momentum. After the outbreak started, President Xi Jinping spoke on the phone with King Philippe, and expressed sympathies and solidarity with the Belgian royal family, the Belgian government and people. The central and local governments of the two countries, as well as the Chinese and Belgian people have supported each other to tide over the difficulties caused by the epidemic, further strengthening the all-round partnership of friendly cooperation. Looking to the "post-epidemic era", China and Belgium will continue to deepen pragmatic cooperation, maintain communication and coordination on multilateral and international affairs, jointly safeguard multilateralism, uphold free trade, and advance the improvement of global governance. China and Belgium will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2021. I believe our bilateral ties and friendly cooperation across the board will achieve further progress to the benefits of our peoples.

Overseas Chinese,

Dear Friends,

No matter where they are, overseas Chinese are connected at heart with the motherland. Since the outbreak of the epidemic in China, overseas Chinese have supported in funds and in kind the fight against the virus. Blood is thicker than water. Your contributions played an important role in fighting the epidemic in China. Overseas Chinese in Belgium also support China's poverty alleviation efforts. They donated to the poverty alleviation project in Jinping County, Yunnan Province amid the severe impact of the epidemic this year. After the virus became widespread in Belgium, overseas Chinese took rapid actions to participate in and support the local fight against the epidemic through donating funds and masks, delivering meals, and ensuring shipment of much-needed materials. Here, I express sincere appreciation and pay tribute to overseas Chinese in Belgium for your important contributions to the development of the motherland, to China-Belgium friendly cooperation and people-to-people exchanges. I hope you will continue to work for the enhancement of China-Belgium friendship and the growth of bilateral relations. The Chinese Embassy in Belgium will continue to follow the principle of "diplomacy for the people", and provide support and services for all overseas Chinese working, living and studying in Belgium.

After 71 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China, we have only felt more deeply that when China says we need to place "the people" front and center, it is never a slogan, but something that we honor with concrete actions. "People" are not only about individuals. To Chinese people across the world, it is a collective whole that is the genuine maker of history.

Upon the 71st anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, let us wish that our motherland will continue to enjoy prosperity, that overseas Chinese will lead healthy and happy lives, and peace, tranquility and development will continue to prevail in the world.
