Chinese President Xi Jinping strongly condemned a series of terror attacks on Brussels, which killed dozens of people and injured many others.

In a message sent Tuesday to King Philippe of Belgium following the deadly attacks, Xi extended his deep condolences to the victims and expressed sincere sympathy for the injured and families of the victims.

At least 34 people were killed on Tuesday morning in a series of explosions at Brussels airport and a metro station close to the European Union institutions.

The Chinese president noted that terrorism is the common enemy of mankind and a common threat facing the international community, saying China opposes all forms of terrorism and stands ready to safeguard peace and stability of China, Belgium and the whole world.

China stands ready to work with Belgium to enhance cooperation on security and anti-terrorism, to promote concerted international efforts to address both the symptoms and root causes of terrorism, Xi said.

The extremist group Islamic State has claimed the terror attacks, which put Belgium and other European countries on high alert.
