Foreign Ministry Spokesperson’s Remarks on Environmental Protection Organizations Saying the Chinese Delegation Obstructed Discussions on a Moratorium on Deep-sea Mining
2023-08-03 16:59

Q: Some environmental protection organizations said that the Chinese delegation obstructed discussions on a moratorium on deep-sea mining activities at the International Seabed Authority meetings. What’s China’s comment?

A: The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and mandated with managing deep-sea activities. It regulates deep-sea activities and protects deep-sea environment through formulating mineral resources development rules and regulations and regional environment management plans. The topic of a moratorium on deep-sea mining proposed by some countries was not included in the agenda of the ISA Assembly because it was inconsistent with the Rules of Procedure. China stands ready to work with all parties to continue supporting the ISA’s work and promote sustainable deep-sea activities and effective protection of the marine environment based on science and in accordance with relevant rules.
